The Cincinnati Reds continue to make moves early in this hot stove league season.  Reports today have the Reds signing OF/2B, Skip Schumaker, to a 2-year contract.  I know what you are saying, offensive upgrade?  Are you drinking.  Oh course I’m drinking, Sierra Nevada Celebration to be exact but that is not the point.  Lets take a look at his numbers.

AB HR RBI SB BA OBP SLG
2008 STL 153 540 8 46 8 0.302 0.359 0.406
2009 STL 153 532 4 35 2 0.303 0.364 0.393
2010 STL 137 476 5 42 5 0.265 0.328 0.338
2011 STL 117 367 2 38 0 0.283 0.333 0.351
2012 STL 107 272 1 28 1 0.276 0.339 0.368
2013 LAD 125 319 2 30 2 0.263 0.332

0.332

Last year was Schumaker’s worse hitting year as we all see.  He hit .263.  Can you name the only Reds to hit better than .263 last year?

Joey Votto            .305

Shin-Soo Choo   .285

Schumaker had an OBP of .332, who topped that one?

The same two plus Xavier Paul.

You get the picture.  As much as you don’t want to admit it, slap hitting Skip Schumaker makes the Reds a better offensive team.  Notice who hasn’t been mentioned state wise yet?  That is right, fan favorite and first guy I put on the bus out of town, Brandon Phillips.
