March 12, 1999

March 12, 1999 is a date that both Indiana and Kentucky basketball fans remember with heavy hearts.  Not only do I remember that date but I remember how great Indianapolis high school basketball was that year.  Jason Gardner was leading North Central to the state title before he headed off to Arizona.  Names like Jared Jefferies and Zach Randolph were catching fire but no one was bigger, literally, than Lawrence North’s John’s Stewart.

John took the court that night for the last time as Lawrence North was taking on Bloomington South in the Columbus Regional.  John never heard the final horn that night as he died on the court.  John was later named to the Indiana All-Stars posthumously and then four years later honored by Tubby Smith and the Kentucky Wildcats on Senior Day.

The reason why I brought this up is KSTV led by Thomas Beisner put together a very fitting and touching look back at the life of John Stewart and how he touched so many in his short time.
