Archive for September, 2014

So my last post led to a conversation with my 16 year old daughter that led me to the history of the second greatest boy band of all time (the greatest is the Jackson 5) New Edition and the music that spun off of that group.  Now my fondest New Edition memories are of me riding in the hatch back part of Amy’s two seater while Missy was riding shotgun.  (Hey I was a freshman and I had two hotties driving me to school.)

Let’s start with a New Edition classic.

Now that led me to explain that Bobby Brown had a life before him killing Whitney and him being a fat reality TV star.

Then I had to show her how three of the guys also split away to bring us Poison from the post before.  She went on to say her Senior quote will be “Never trust a big butt and a smile” and well it should be.

Well that group didn’t stop there.  They unleashed this upon our lives.

and this

Now you had other solo projects from New Edition from Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant and Keith Sweat like this.

Now I don’t know if any of this was any good for the music world but I have a feeling that if it wasn’t for the guys of New Edition that many of our kids would not be around.

90’s Flashback

Posted: September 26, 2014 by jmklee in Uncategorized

The 90’s were a great time in music history.  The Seattle movement made us all forget about the computer pop of the 80’s but it also brought us some of the greatest guilty pleasures ever.  Here are a few favorites that I love but when I come across in my truck I have to turn down at stop lights in fear of being judged.

Skee-Lo – I Wish

Tag Team – Whoop!

Digital Underground – Humpty Dance

Color Me Badd – I Wanna Sex You Up

Bell Biv DeVoe – Poison

Ok, well if you kids are looking over your shoulder like mine are right now they are laughing and rolling on the floor so make sure you push play on this to show them what the 90s were all about.

Should have put him on

Buck could have given the Yankees and all their fans the biggest shit burger in the history of the game. As much as I love Jeter I really wanted to see the catcher stand up and extend that right are just to see if there would have been a riot.

Top 5 things you need to do this October

Posted: September 22, 2014 by jmklee in Uncategorized

Summers over and let’s bring on the best sports month on the calendar!  Don’t get me wrong, I love summer.  Especially after the brutal winter we had last year when it snowed two days after Christmas and it didn’t melt until March.  But we are just a few days away from the best sports month on the calendar, October.

It is the only month that all the major sports are going at the same time or at least about to get going.  The NFL and College Football is in full swing.  The baseball playoffs are going on and basketball season is in full practice and about to start the season.  I love it!

All the fall beers are on the shelf and there is no better time to pour some Makers Mark over ice and sit down by the fire.

Here are my five favorite things that I look forward to every October and you should make a point to make a part of your October.

1.  Take in a college football game at a campus near you.

There is nothing better than walking around campus with a beer and grilling all the finest meats and cheeses in the land.  Hell, after last week even the Hoosiers are fun to watch again.  Just a warning though, don’t go to a Louisville tailgate so you don’t have to explain to the kids what this is.

2.  Explain baseball to someone under the age of 12.

For much of the year most people take baseball for granted and I really don’t blame them.  It is a long season and people are out enjoying the summer weather.  Baseball to me has always a better sport to listen to over the radio and kids today just don’t listen to the radio.  With iPods and MP3 players there is no need to carry a radio to the beach or cookout any more.  This is why baseball nerds try to not let the sport die and during the playoffs is the best time to sit your kid or friend down and watch a baseball game together.

3.  Drink

Now I’m not saying to party till you puke, unless you are into that sort of thing, but there is no better drinking weather than in the fall.  Not to hot, not to cold and if there is a chill in the air then just start a fire.  Nothing better than sitting by the fire with friends and listing to your favorite Bread or Hall & Oates tunes.  No really, Rich Girl rocks!

4.  Take in an outdoor concert

If you are close to Indy then my favorite place to see live music is The Rathskeller’s Beirgarten.  Downtown Indy, great weather, German beer and always great party bands.  If you don’t live close to the circle city then just find a local place and make a date night of it.

5.  Have a seafood boil

This is an annual occurrence at the BDS compound.  There is nothing better than cooking up some tasty crab legs, shrimp and lobster tails while playing corn hole till dark.  We always pick a Saturday that has plenty of great college football match-ups and make a day of it.  The highlight of the day is after the main boil we pull out the big bag of crawfish to boil up and see how many of the women folk we can gross out as we eat them like they are going out of style.  Here is a recipe to get you started if you have never done it before.  If you are like you will develop your own recipe and just wing it.

So there you go, a few ideas to get you out and enjoy the beautiful fall weather.  If you get through all of those you can always do what I do and hand out Halloween candy while watching a Kentucky basketball exhibition game on the lap top.  Happy Fall!

Just when you thought that Friday was over giving us news word out of Scottsdale, AZ about the arrest of former Kentucky and NBA player, Rex Chapman was arrested on suspicion of multiple shoplifting incidents.

This is just another case of someone who has never been told no thinking they were above the law and not having to live by the rules you and I have to live by.  Rex, who fell out of favor with UK fans during last season’s championship game, looks to be continuing down the path of self destruction.  When Chapman stated that Cal was a “done deal” to the Lakers I thought it was nothing more than a self-serving publicity stunt to promote his recently launched website.  Well it looks like Rex might have been needing some extra cash and was willing to throw away the love he would have gotten from the state of Kentucky for the rest of his life.  Now it looks like he is willing to drag his family through the mud and possible loss his freedom too.

You will not get much argument that the state of Alabama is the King of College Football right now but many people in Indiana and North Carolina will argue that Kentucky is not the epicenter of College Basketball.  Well, they are wrong.

The past five years Kentucky and Louisville have combined for 2 Championships, 1 Runner-Up, 2 Final Fours, 1 Elite Eight and 1 Sweet Sixteen.

Right now the Big Blue Nation has made the annual pilgrimage to Lexington to hold their week long camp out for Big Blue Madness tickets and in Louisville the front page of the Courier-Journal today, during football season, looks like this.

There is only one state in the Union that football will not be the leading topic on the local shows.  Looks like it will be a fun one in The Commonwealth today!

Baseball and I am going to miss Derek Jeter

Posted: September 18, 2014 by jmklee in Uncategorized

I have always said if I had to trade lives with one person, any person, alive today I would trade lives with Derek Jeter.  Jeter in my mind is the best all around shortstop in the history of the game.  He is the most famous athlete on the most famous team in the most famous city and has done it with style.  You have never heard of Jeter getting in trouble.  You never heard of a team mate having problems with him.  Hell, you never even heard any of his super model ex girlfriends come out and say anything bad about him.  In today’s world of 24-7 media and camera phones for there to not be one bad thing you can say about him not only makes him a great man but a smart one too.

I am going to miss having Jeter around so will the game of baseball.  I believe that Major League Baseball is at it’s best when the Yankees are great.  People either love them or hate them but they care about them.  If the Reds ever make another World Series I hope they play the Yankees just so it will feel like a real World Series.  When Jeter hangs them up he will be the last of the great Yankees in this most resent run and that team will just not feel the same.  Baseball will just not seem as big when you don’t have to beat the boys in the pinstripes to be the best.

Gatorade made a grate commercial that sums up #2 and the love affair he and the Big Apple have for each other.
