5 Conferences, 10 Teams still in the hunt

The stretch run has arrived for this college football season and after last weeks wild weekend we are down to ten teams that have a legitimate path to this years playoff.  Let’s take a look.

Mississippi State – This is the only team in my mind that can afford a loss down the stretch but only one.

Remaining games:  @Bama, Vandy, @Ole Miss, SEC Championship

Alabama – With a win at home this weekend Alabama will be in position to represent the SEC West in the SEC championship game.  If this team wins out they will be in the playoff and giving the SEC a chance to have two teams in the playoff.

Remaining games:  Miss St., W. Carolina, Auburn, SEC Championship

If the two teams below win out they will play each other for a chance to make the final four in the BigTen title game.

Ohio State – @Minn, Indiana, Michigan, BigTen Championship

Nebraska  – @Wisconsin, Minn, @Iowa, BigTen Championship

I know that many FSU fans would say that a one loss Florida St. team should still make it but common since should tell the committee the opposite.  There is a good chance that the ACC will be on the outside looking in when the playoffs start and probably should be.  This is by far the weakest of the five power conferences.  The only chance Duke has to get in is if FSU wins out and Duke beats them soundly in the ACC title game.

Florida St. – @Miami, BC, Florida, ACC Championship

Duke – @Syracuse, VaTech, North Carolina, ACC Championship

This is the only power 5 conference without a championship game and there is a good shot it could get messy picking the best team in the conference.  You could very easily have two teams with only one loss.  Now I know I said above the SEC is the only conference that could get in two team.  Well there is an outside chance the Big12 could too.  Miss St and FSU wins out, a two loss team wins the BigTen and Pac12.  There are a bunch of ifs there but there is a path.

Baylor  – Ok St., @Texas Tech, Kansas St.

TCU – @Kansas, @Texas, Iowa St.

If these two win out they will play for the Pac12 title in the new 49er’s stadium for a trip to the playoff.

Oregon – Colorado, @Org St., PAC12 Championship

Arizona State – @Org St., Wash St., @Arizona, PAC12 Championship

So as you see there is a lot of football to be played.  Here is my guess as to who you will see in the final four.

  1. Mississippi State
  2. Oregon
  3. Ohio State
  4. Baylor
