A Dozen Great Songs. Part 2

Posted: December 1, 2014 by nickd0913 in Uncategorized

I hope you had a chance to give the first batch of my favorite songs from 2014 a listen and found a few that you liked.  Today we are going to finish things up and let you have a look and a listen to my 6 favorite songs from the past year.   These 6 songs are some real crowd pleasers so sit back and enjoy.

6. Old Crow Medicine Show – Sweet Amarillo

This is another collaboration Old Crow Medicine show did with Bob Dylan.  Dylan sent the unfinished song to the band and they put together a great song.  I don’t know if this song will reach the status of the song “Wagon Wheel”, the first song they partnered with Dylan on, but this is a great song. Hopefully Darius Rucker does not do a cover of this song and ruin the it like he did on “Wagon Wheel”.  Here is a great version of “Sweet Amarillo” recorded at the Grand Ole Opry.

5. Will Hoge – Middle of America

Will Hoge is one of my favorite artists making music today.  He has a new album coming out early next year which is always something to look forward to. He has already released the first single from the upcoming album and it instantly became one of my favorite songs of the year.  I knew it would be one of my favorites when I heard  the aggressive hand claps in the song.  Any song that has hand claps has a chance to be real good and this song is no exception.  Give a listen to the new song and see what you think.  It definitely has 1980s John Mellencamp feel to it.

4. Lydia Loveless – Really Wanna See You

This album came out early in the year and I have played it about a hundred times since I bought it.  Every song on this album is great.  I had a hell of a time picking just one song from it.  The best way I can think of to describe her sound is if Stevie Nicks was the lead singer for Uncle Tupelo.  I have a feeling this album will be on the top albums of 2014 list in a couple of weeks.  Check out a live version of “Really Wanna See You” recorded in front of about 10 people.

3. Sturgill Simpson – Living The Dream

This guy is a bad boy.  He seems to be doing everything he can to not get his music played on country radio and it is working.  He is a throwback to the Outlaw Country movement of the 1970s and people love it.  He keeps playing bigger venues and has been making the rounds on the late night talk show circuit playing his music.  I could not even get a ticket to see him in the ATL.  Here is a great version of “Living The Dream”, my favorite song from his album “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music” recorded on the Conan O’Brien show.

2. Ryan Adams – Gimme Something Good

I wore this song out the 1st week it came out.  I still listen to it pretty regularly today.  It has a Tom Petty “Stop Dragging my Heart Around” feel to it and I love it.  I have been waiting for years for Adams to put out music that sounds like this.  It was worth the wait.  Here he is doing a great version for David Letterman.  Dave even has him play the song again he liked it so much.

1. Rich Robinson – The Giving Key

In a year that produced a ton of great songs that I have loved listening to none came even close to being as good as this song was.  The album, “The Ceaseless Sight”, is easily the best solo record Rich has released and this song is the high point of the album.  As always Rich’s guitar playing is great and I especially love the backing vocals from Amy Helm, the daughter of Levon Helm.  When I saw Rich in concert this past summer the song was even better live.  One of my favorite songs of not only 2014 but any year.
