Summer Jams

Spring is officially here.  I know this because the Masters started today and the smell of burning couches in Lexington is starting to fade.  So now that we are heading towards summer it is probably time I gave you some music to check out.  It is important that everyone have some summer jams lined up.  Let me tell you about some music I am excited about.  There is actually more music that excites me than I am going to write about.  I am just too lazy to write about all of the great stuff out there right now and there is a new episode of Nashville on later tonight that I need to watch.  So let’s get to it so I can find out if Deacon is going to die of cancer or if he will live long enough to make sweet love to Rayna.

Will Hoge

You probably know this guy is one of my favorite artists that is making music today.  He is like a mixture of Tom Petty, Born in the USA era Bruce Springsteen, and early 80s John Mellencamp all combined into one bad mother effer.  He is a little too country for rock radio stations and a little too rock for country radio stations which is precisely what I like hearing.  He just came out with a new album, “Small Town Dreams”, on Tuesday and it is great.  Probably one of the best albums he has put out.   I have been wearing it out in the 3 short days I have owned it.  Check out my favorite song from the album.  Play it loud.  You will want to get drunk after listening to it.

Dwight Yoakam

Dwight Yoakam is a legend.  If you do not believe me just ask Jim Dalton.  He once told a parking lot full of concert goers they had just seen a legend after attending a Dwight Yoakam show about ten years ago.  I tend to agree with my dad on this one even if I do not scream it at a parking lot full of strangers.  Anyway Yoakam has a new album, “Second Hhand Heart”, out next week.  I have heard 3 songs off of the album including the ferocious cover of “Man of Constant Sorrow’ and to say I am excited is an understatement.  From everything I have read and heard, this album is a return to the type of records he was putting out at the beginning of his career and if that is true then this album will be a real mother f&*ker. Give a listen to the title track from his upcoming album.

Anderson East

Alabama has produced some incredible music over the years.  If you do not believe me just watch the “Muscle Shoals’ documentary and find out about the musical history of that town and state.  Alabama is producing some incredible bands right now as well.  Jason Isbell, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, The Drive by Truckers, The Alabama Shakes, and now a new guy named Anderson East.  He has his first full length album coming out this summer and I cannot wait.  The album was produced by Dave Cobb (Jamey Johnson, Jason Isbell, and Sturgill Simpson) which automatically gets me excited. One other thing gets me excited about the upcoming album and that is this effin video.  Check the video for this obscure cover, “Find ‘Em, Fool ‘Em and Forget Em'” from the world famous Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals.

Gill Landry

Have you heard of Gill Landry? That was a rhetorical question.  I know you have no idea who he is.  Well, Landry is a member of a band called Old Crow Medicine Show.  He just put out a solo album cleverly named “Gill Landry” and I really like it.  If you are looking for an album that sounds like his other band then this is not for you.  This album is full of slower, sad songs which has always been the type of album I like .  It sounds great and this guy has a great voice.  I was pretty shocked when I heard his voice for the first time. With the sparse arrangements and Landry’s soothing voice this record is perfect to play on a Sunday morning.  You should play it this Sunday morning.  Give the song “Just Like You” a listen.

JD McPherson

This guy is a bad boy.  I thought his first record was good but his new album “Let The Good Times Roll” is great and I do mean GREAT.  This album will end up being in my top 5 for 2015.   I recently heard an interview where his voice was compared to Little Richard’s.  That seems like a great comparison to me.  It is hard to believe this is a white guy from Oklahoma.  This guy is too good for just one video.  Check out “Let the Good Times Roll’ and “Head Over Heels” from the new record.
