Monday night football is over and thus closes the sports calendar for the week.   Farris Bueller reminds us, “life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”  So let’s do just that and take a look at the ones that rose above the others and owned this past week.

This week I have three athletes that showed they had what it took to have the Huge Sack of the Week.

TANNER MANGUM – BYU – QB  We are only two weeks in and Mangum has already delivered two game winning miracles by stunning Nebraska on a Hail Mary in Week 1, then dashing Boise State’s hopes with a last-minute 35-yard heave on fourth and 7. Wait what, he wasn’t even supposed to be in the field?  That’s right, BYU lost their Heisman candidate QB in their week one win against Nebraska and Mangum fresh off his Mormon mission has stepped in and taken the reigns of the BYU team and driven them through the toughest starting schedule in all of college football.  We will see if Mangum can let the boys hang low again as he leads his team into the Rose Bowl against another ranked team in UCLA.

ROBERTA VINCI – ITALY – TENNIS  Usually you don’t think of 5′ 4” females that weight next to nothing having enough sack to make the list but guess what?  Roberta’s sack was HUGE!!!  Vinci was the person no one had heard of that no one cared about going to be the sacrificial lamb on Serena’s quest for the Grand Slam.  I saw that she was a 300-1 underdog heading in and after dropping the first set 2-6 there was no one that thought the scrappy Italian had a chance.  It was odd watching the crowd that seemed to change ala Rocky IV and start rooting for Vinci when they saw she was just better than Serena in that 3rd set.  Here is her classic post match interview.

DESHONE KIZER – NOTRE DAME – QB So the starting quarterback transfers, the new starter that had captured the nation goes down, along with losing two starting running backs and also a tight end.  What do you do?

r1k4xWell Kizer went all DJ Khaled on us and all he does is win win win.  When Kizer took over the defense immediately went into the tank and pretty much left the game in the hands of a QB that had not taken a real snap since high school two years ago.  Kizer is a big guy with a bigger sack that not only put the Irish in position to kick a winning field goal but made a 50 yard throw, right on the money to put a dagger in the hearts of Virginia fans
