Archive for October, 2016

As we are about to enter November it is time to really start focusing on what teams have a shot at making the college football playoff and who doesn’t.  I know ESPN is going to start their hour-long weekly production Tuesday night but if we have learned anything from the past couple years, that show and poll means absolutely nothing.  The people involved came out last season and admitted they didn’t take it seriously until the final poll anyway so do yourself a favor and just don’t watch.

Let’s take a look at what the teams still in the race have left on their schedule.

So what does all this mean you ask?  Let’s break it down and start at the bottom.

Florida and Western Michigan – These two teams are the longest shots to make the playoff.  Florida would need to run the table with 3 road games against tough teams.  Then would have to beat probably Bama in the SEC Championship game.  Not gonna happen.  Western Michigan just doesn’t have the resume.  They would need Armageddon to have a chance to slip in.  Is there a chance?  Yes, and the Broncos have probably a better chance than Florida but it is still a long shot.

Baylor and West Virginia – These two teams will play a knockout game in five weeks and frankly I don’t think they even get that far.  No one gives any credibility to the BIG12 and nor should they.

Nebraska and Ohio St. – Speaking of knockout games these two teams will play this Saturday and the loser is out.  The winner will need to go on to beat Michigan either in the BIG10 Championship (Nebraska) or at home the last week of the season (Ohio St.).  You can make a real argument for either one of these teams if they can run the table because the BIG10 has had a great year and will send at least one team to the playoff.

Louisville and Texas A&M – If these two teams run the table and finish with one loss they probably will still not play for their conference championship and that will probably leave them on the outside looking in.  Could it help them to not have to win another game? Sure, but there are going to be other 1-loss teams that will have a chance to shine on championship weekend while they are home.  Also both teams have not played well lately and have a lot of work left to put themselves in the discussion.

Clemson and Washington – If they win out they are in no matter what happens around them.  With one loss they are still in the discussion but Clemson’s non-impressive season and the fact no one stays up long enough to watch Washington play will leave them to fight it out with the other 1-loss teams if they falter.

Alabama and Michigan – If you are a fan of these two teams get ready for the playoff.  These two giants are rolling and everyone wants to see them play.  Even if they would finish with one loss they will get the nod over the other one loss teams.

Best Chances:  Bama, Michigan, Clemson, and Washington

Next in Line:  Ohio St., Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Louisville

Long Shots:  Baylor, West Virginia, Florida, and Western Michigan

Happy Halloween!  Before we head into November and the stretch run of the college football season we all should enjoy this last day of October.

I know I have already posted this a few days ago but I can’t stop watching.  The girls and I watched it about 100 times as they carved pumpkins last night.

unknown-159Speaking of bats, the Indians are sitting pretty as they head back to Cleveland for game 6 and 7 if necessary.  Even though the Cubs won last night it was a tough weekend for fans of the northside team.  But hey, if I paid $200 to stand in a crowded bar with a bunch of other dorks only to pay another $10 a beer to watch my team get rolled I would probably be crying also.  The biggest sham though is the fact MLB didn’t have one day baseball game in Wrigley over the weekend.  Stupid!

OK, time for the college football season to take center stage.  We lost two more teams in the college football knockout pool.  Boise State took it on the chin against f’ing Wyoming for the love of God and Utah lost their second game against a smoking hot Washington team.

We are down to 12 teams for 4 spots.  Once again the top 4 are clear.

Michigan, Clemson, Washington and Alabama

Followed by A&M, Ohio St., Nebraska, Florida, Louisville, and the two Big 12 teams West Virginia and Baylor.  Oh, and don’t sleep on Western Michigan.  If we only end up with 3 teams with 1 loss or fewer and Western Michigan stays unbeaten there will be a portion of the college football world that will be yelling to put them in the playoff.

A&M and Ohio St. are the two teams that look to have the best shot of getting in outside the four leaders.  Clemson looks to be the worst of the four but should not get tested any further in what has turned into a sub par ACC this year.  All I know for sure is November’s going to rock!

I Don’t Like Candy Corn!

If you grew up or raised kids in the early 2000’s then you know Moose A. Moose and his dislike for the worse Halloween candy of all time, candy corn.  Since they don’t play this on Nick Jr. any more BDS thought it was our obligation to keep it alive.

WARNING:  Watching this video will cause you to sing this song for the next week.

imagesevg7dy0oWhat a great time to be a sports fan.  The NBA and NHL are in full swing.  Football is getting to the point where we are starting to talk playoffs and bowls.  But most fun of all for me is that baseball and the World Series is the water cooler talk around the nation.  I know the reason everyone cares is being driven by the Cubs, (we have to take the good with the bad) but love them or hate them, this baseball playoff has been fun to watch.

Speaking of the Cubs the Legend of Kyle Schwarber grew even larger last night.  After going 2 for 4 with two more RBI last night the Middletown, OH and IU product has a post season stat line that is just crazy.

I kid how Cubs fans are the biggest dorks in all of sports, they are, but I have to admit thanks to the northsiders run to the fall classic this has really been fun.  I know when something is big in the sports world when my wife is aware of it.  Well she came home last night and asked if the World Series was on tonight.  Guess it is big.

Speaking of the game last night, a couple of area basketball coaches took in the game last night.

Here was Cal’s view of the game last night.

But it looks like Coach Tom Crean was able to get a little closer to the action.

How about Danny Guiser pointing out the rear occurrence of non-clapping Crean.  So I guess all they need to do is drop the temperature of Assembly Hall to 35 degrees and Coach Clappy will stand still.
